The Adult Education Outreach Program is an opportunity for your congregation to receive highly subsidized speakers and program planning assistance from Gratz College. For many years, Gratz College has served informally as a “matchmaker” between local Jewish scholars and institutions. A grant from Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia will now allow Gratz College to formalize and expand this service. Our goal is to provide high quality programs that will support your adult education mission through one easy resource and contact. Rita Ratson, Coordinator, Yiddish Language and Cultural Program, Gratz College
If you were ever told, “You should grow in the ground like an onion” or “Go bang your head against the wall,” you won’t want to miss this lecture. After a brief introduction on the origin of the Yiddish language and her own background as a native Yiddish speaker, Rita Ratson will discuss many beloved Yiddish expressions and folksongs as well as some lesser know gems.

Growing Up Jewish in an Arab Land
Rabbi Albert Gabbai
Rabbi Albert Gabbai: Rabbi Albert Gabbai was born in Egypt of old Sephardi ancestry. At a young age, he was taken to a Concentration Camp for three years. He was educated in France and then in New York at Yeshiva University/Rabbi Yitshak Elchanan Theological Seminary. He was ordained in Jerusalem by the Sephardi Chief Rabbi of Israel.
Rabbi Gabbai served as the Hazzan at the Spanish-Portuguese Synagogue, Sheareth Yisroel, in New York City prior to becoming the Rabbi of Congregation Mikveh Israel in Center City, Philadelphia, the second oldest synagogue in the country. He is President of the Rabbinical Council of greater Philadelphia. Rabbi Gabbai speaks many languages including French, English, Hebrew, Arabic, Italian and Spanish. He travels and lectures throughout the world.
